I love fandoms. We all love fandoms. Fandoms are fun! But there’s one thing I really don’t like and that’s when people try to take something and remove it so far out of it’s element it’s obnoxious. For example: Taking a children’s show and making a violent rated R fanfic of it or taking something and crossing it over with something that doesn’t really fit. I’m sure we’ve seen it before. Someone taking [insert fandom subject here] and crossing it over with something totally on the opposite of the spectrum. I don’t want to name names, but I’m sure we can all think of at least one fandom, maybe even ones we’re in, that will do something like that.
Does that mean I hate crossovers? No! I love crossovers! It’s fun to see two characters from two different worlds interacting, but I feel there should be a COMMON THEME that makes the crossover feel unforced. For example, SNK VS Capcom. What’s the common theme? Heroic fighters who test their strength against others. Super Robot Wars? People in giant robots fighting evil. Hell, I’ve even seen someone draw Loki as a troll from Homestuck and was cool with it because Loki’s overall personality would fit such a role if needed.
tl;dr: I’m not saying you can’t do what you want. By all means, draw and write what you wish! But I think people should stop and think about how they could actually make a good crossover as opposed to just going “I’m going to take X and shove it into Y and it’ll be awesomerific!”
